Soul Food

After tossing and turning for hours in my bed last night, I finally decided to relinquish all efforts of sleeping and planted my feet on the floor well before sunrise. If there is one thing you should know about me it is that I love my sleep…not wake up midday kind of love my sleep but definitely 5 different times set up on my alarm clock kind of love. How about you, are you a sleepy head or a morning riser?

Needless to say, I woke up not in the happiest of moods. And that got me to start thinking about what is it that has me restless. After much consideration, I placed my finger on it: the lack of soul food.

 If the mind is the center self and the body is the vessel of self, then the soul is the essence of self.

what is soul food?

Just like you would feed your mind and body nutrients, the same must be done for the soul.

Nutrition for the soul is a tricky thing because you are feeding the essence of who you are, so it is unique for each individual. What gets you going may not be the same as your cranky father, kooky uncle, crazy best friend or that mysterious stranger who is always in line at Starbucks the same time you are on Monday mornings. So defining soul food is also a reflective journey of self.

There are various types of food that can nurture your soul. The objective of such foods is to soothe and fill yourself with the positive, which in turn gets to work on your soul. A few of my favorites are chocolate, lavender, nearly any hot tea, tumeric, and green smoothies. Feel free to do your own research on foods that make you feel good physically, mentally, and spiritually. Yes, this includes your favorite foods! If at a lost as to where to begin and are willing to try some things new, look into various food items that may address what you may feel like you are lacking…could be various vitamins, colors in your diet, a certain spice, and the list can go on and on.

spiritual food

Most of us need some sort of idea that keeps us grounded, whether it be the power of self, the comfort in facts and reality, or a God. Depending on what it is that you yearn for will determine what is the appropriate spiritual food for you. It can take the form of a personal devotional in the morning, reading a spiritual self-help, joining Oprah on Super Soul Sunday (this is one of my personal favorites), or any sort of creative outlet. A universal practice that I believe helps all people from different walks of life is meditation. So next time you are feeling a little off kilter, why not find your favorite quite cozy place and give meditation a try.

emotional food

It’s simple: think positive and be happy. I know it is easier said than done, but here me out. Life is one grand rollercoaster that soars to the very highest and plummets to the very lowest. So how can we fare in such a tumultuous reality? Well, the key is in perspective. YOU have control as to whether you see the glass half empty or half full; your current situation by no means has to be your final destination. And to be honest, at the end of the day there is always something to be grateful for. It’s propelling your self forward into positivity and hope, that will continue to foster a healthy environment for your soul to prosper and be at peace.

when you need more soul food in your life?

Well, for me it is when I sense when my happiness and wellbeing seem quite frayed. I find myself not truly centered or fulfilled in my day to day. My desires and passions feel quite dulled. Whenever I begin to feel any of the above, I spritz some lavender spray, head straight to my yoga mat and let the good vibes flow.
